My site is designed to be low-latency and highly-responsive. It features minimal graphics and is built of default HTML elements. It's part of a larger collective of 'independent websites' - low-tech, hand-made, creative personal websites. You might also hear it referred to as the 'web revival' - an attempt to claw back some webspace from the corporations that dominate it today. I am hosted by Netifly and the HTML was built by hand with many thanks to W3. My domain name provider is Porkbun and my newsletter is hosted by Buttondown - both excellent services run independently by small companies.
With the addictive algorithms of social media sites already having done so much damage to the world, and the incessant push onto us of data-collecting products by Big Tech, I'd rather just stop using their stuff altogether. The Indie Web is the anti-social media hemisphere of the internet. There are no 'likes' beyond the things you like that you choose to share with the world. There's little clout to be found beyond designing a cool web page that others talk about. There's often nothing to buy and nothing to consume, but there are lots of things to see and do. One gets around via 'web-rings', an ancient method of travel. AI, NFTs or cryptocurrency aren't often topics of intense conversation. There's no algorithms or ads or cookies that track you across the internet. Web design harkens back to a simpler time: You may recall Geocities or other 'bring your own code' webhosts that reigned supreme before everyone started using the same Wordpress layout. Neocities and Nekoweb have replaced the defunct Geocities, and sites adhere to the design philosophies commonly found there.
